Our journey with Halfpenny Green.
In a region traditionally known for beer and pork scratchings, two visionary winemakers are redefining the Black Country's landscape with their passion for English wine.
Our founder, James Deakin, transformed his late grandmother's Worcestershire property into what we now know as Wagtail Retreat—a serene vineyard complete with hand-built cabins and a picturesque lake. Since planting vines in 2016, James has navigated the challenges of viticulture, bolstered by support from his family, neighbour Jon, and formal training at Plumpton College. His collaboration with Martin Vickers of Halfpenny Green Wine Estate was instrumental; Vickers processed our grapes and served as a mentor, sharing decades of winemaking wisdom.
Martin Vickers, a pioneer who planted his first vines in 1983, established Halfpenny Green in an era when English wine was met with skepticism. His dedication turned a modest 0.2-hectare plot into a thriving 12-hectare estate, supporting over 100 grower clients. Vickers' legacy is profound, having inspired and guided new vintners like Deakin. Tragically, Vickers passed away at 82, just a day after completing the 2024 harvest, leaving behind a transformed wine landscape in the West Midlands.
